Chapter Thirty-five

Kowalski would never know how close he came to death in those few pregnant moments, nor how well-prepared Connor was for the situation.

He was also quite sure that the Head of Decree Four would be unable to refuse the proposals he was about to put on the table. And the Head of Decree Four’s acceptance of them would allow him to choose his own time and place whereby to eliminate the Jesuit Superior.

‘There is a viable way out of this disagreement, avoiding confrontation,’ he said to Kowalski, eventually.

‘And what might that be, Father Tremayne?’

‘You may recall I told you that when I returned to the underground Temple in Tregellan on that final, terrible day in Cornwall, that I did so via a passage running between the stables of the Inn there to Culver’s place of worship – most probably used for smuggling purposes originally?’

‘Go on . . .’

‘Following which as you know, before contacting the military regarding the removal of the Ark, I took the opportunity of removing several items of incalculable value from the cavern.’

‘It is not something I am likely to forget, Father Tremayne – nor the fact that you have still not delivered them to me despite your assurances that you would do so.’

‘For as long as they remained a bargaining tool, Father Kowalski, they have served their purpose equally as well by remaining in my possession.’

‘They are however, no longer a bargaining tool,’ Kowalski observed, pointedly.

‘No longer a bargaining tool? Among them being the original Book of Moses written partly in his own hand? You would never have made a poker player.’

‘I have no wish to play poker and I was referring to the fact that you no longer have a hand to play.’

‘Then you should review the cards more often,’ Connor advised. ‘Both your own and mine. You never know . . . you might win more frequently.’ He now played what he believed to be his Aces. ‘There is something else, something you should know which I have never revealed to you or to anyone,’ he told Kowalski.

‘A further entrance exists to the temple beneath the village of Tregellan, and this separate access in common with the ancient Church and all of the surrounding areas, is part of a large area of protected land now held in a trusteeship.’

Kowalski reacted visibly, registering sudden conflict of thoughts and Connor could almost see the feverish turning of the wheels in his mind.

‘Another entrance? Where?’ he croaked.

Connor refrained from answering the question. ‘The place I speak of holds untold treasures the likes of which even you could never imagine in your wildest dreams. They include the pillars of Solomon, fabulous murals containing fabled details in glowing colours, an immense altar made of solid gold, a golden calf the height of a man holding aloft a great bowl, all of it similarly composed; literally hundreds of precious objects any one of which would be worth more than the Mona Lisa, and a small sub-cavern, originally the Holy of Holies.
